It Was Just a Piece of Wood
But when I kicked it out of the desert sand, somehow
I thought about Dylan Thomas and his “Under
Milk Wood”. Why? Perhaps it was the heat of the high noon in the desert.
Or perhaps I saw a face in that piece of wood that
reminded me of Captain Cat with a smile on his lips remembering his lover Rosie
Probert.
I do not know. But when I brought that piece of wood
to my studio, I decided to make that face come alive.
So, I placed a glass eye in a dark hole to make it a
blind eye. The colours of this eye do reflect the sleepless nights Captain Cat
may had sat at his window looking but not seeing.
I did not want to paint, carve or chip – the piece
of wood had enough of a story to tell. So, I used a hare tail and a piece of
cottontail rabbit fur to frame the head and face.
Then, drilled a small loop in the back and let it
rest on my wall.
Now, that piece of wood came a long way to remind me
of Dylan Thomas, Captain Cat and Rosie Probert!
