When a Hat Finds Its Head
A few weeks ago I posted the steps in the design of
a mountain man fur hat I made out of hare fur and coyote (http://vaheark.blogspot.com/2018/02/mountain-man-fur-hat.html).
I received quite a few comments from viewers, some of them asking if I could
make another hat like it for them. At this point I am experimenting with
designs and materials, so all I post is unique and not replicated.
But I did not have an appropriate hat stand to display that work, until I came across fragments of a skull in the desert. It was scattered around
a 5 meter circle area, and amazingly most of the pieces were there. So, in
addition to my experimentation with taxidermy and sculpting, I decided to
attempt forensic “facial”
reconstruction.
Here is the skull reconstructed.
Now I had a stand for my hat! Of course it scares
some folks when they enter my art workshop, but I think the hare, the coyote,
the predator skull and the dry desert wood co-exist harmoniously.
