Arizona Floor Lamp
I always listen to shapes. When I walk in the
desert, wood, stones and bones seem to be asking for attention. My favorite
materials are sun bleached and time-harboring remains or trees, animals and
rocks.
This piece of wood was all texture and fine lines. I
immediately thought it can illuminate a corner of my art studio and do so with
character.
So, here is the initial shape. I added a piece of
wood for stability at the base.
I needed to keep the outdoor feel to the lamp. So
covered an old glass lampshade with hare skin, but left enough open area to
notice the edges of the glass shade. The shade needed a platform to hang down
straight so used more wood to harbor and hide the electrical socket.
Finally, the hare’s tail broke the monotony of wood
stem.
This lamp has character but also a story to tell.
So, I decided to surround it with a red fox and the skull of a javelina.
I wonder how this arrangement would look in the
desert, at midnight under a sky lit with a billion stars.
