When the Canvas Suggests a Theme





One of the attractions of using animal hide as canvas is that the “tabula rasa” already has a character. A plain cloth canvas tells you nothing – it takes whatever you put on it.

When I looked at this cottontail hide, immediately I saw a raven. The shape needed wings inside! And the topography of the hide reminded me of an island. So, for whatever reason, I painted the Lone Ranger “Tonto”!

Further, I was able to make it similar to my photographic inclinations, as it ended up as a work in Black & White…
